Edward Wagstaff

Writer, Film & TV

Edward Wagstaff is a seasoned writer, editor, and script consultant whose career spans entertainment, film, and conversational AI. Originally from the United Kingdom, he graduated with first-class honors in Philosophy and Modern Languages (Italian) from the University of Oxford. Now based in New York, he has made significant contributions to multiple fields, including screenwriting, production, and technological innovation.

During his studies, Edward spent a year in Rome at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, where he explored cinema and art history while volunteering as a teaching assistant in the English department. He directed a production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest with Italian students and developed his photography skills while immersing himself in Rome’s cultural landscape. He also worked part-time as an English tutor, enriching his international experience.

After graduating, Edward began his professional journey in London’s film industry. He worked with Studio 8 Productions and Peace Arch Films, handling script analysis, ADR sessions, and marketing materials for international film markets. He also interned in post-production on the BBC series Monarch of the Glen, where he gained hands-on experience with editing, sound mixing, and color correction.

In 2004, he joined the feature film Shadows in the Sun, starring Harvey Keitel, Joshua Jackson, and Claire Forlani. Shot in Tuscany and London, the production gave Edward his first significant on-set experience. He worked closely with producers, coordinated between Italian and English-speaking crews, and occasionally served as an on-screen double. The experience cemented his love for film production and expanded his practical skills.

Later that year, Edward moved to the US, where he became a Creative Executive at Fierce Entertainment, a production company and buyers’ representative for international distributors. There, he helped develop the company’s first in-house feature, War (starring Jet Li and Jason Statham), and contributed to tripling its client roster within seven months.

Edward then transitioned to Original Content, a boutique literary management agency, where he focused on discovering and developing new screenwriting talent. He collaborated with writers to pitch and sell scripts, doubling the agency’s client list. Among his projects was the Ugandan hip-hop documentary "Diamonds in the Rough," for which he supervised editing, wrote and directed the narration, and earned an associate producer credit.

By 2008, Edward had fully embraced screenwriting. His first spec script, Arena, was optioned by Summit Entertainment, leading to representation by major agencies such as Endeavor, WME, and Verve TLA. His subsequent works included The Day I Die (optioned by Millennium Films), Break My Bones (commissioned by Warhorse Films), and Powerhouse (sold as a pitch to Lightbulb Pictures). He also adapted the sci-fi graphic novel Shrapnel for Radical Studios and rewrote romcoms There Goes the Bride and High Heels and Horseshoes for PixL TV.

Following the 2023 WGA writers’ strike, Edward turned his attention to conversational AI. He began working with a major tech company to improve large language models, applying his writing expertise to enhance clarity, tone, and storytelling in AI-generated dialogue. While he maintains that AI will never replace human creativity, he sees its immense potential in improving access to information and addressing global challenges, such as climate change and sustainability.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Edward leads a life rich in creative and physical activity. He is passionate about music, photography, fencing, and exploring national parks. A skilled guitarist and bassist, he has written and performed rock and electronic music since his youth. As a fencer, he ranked among the UK’s top 10 youth competitors and represented Oxford University. His love of nature and urban landscapes fuels his photography, often captured through the lens of his 35mm SLR camera.

Edward Wagstaff’s life reflects a rare combination of artistic vision, intellectual curiosity, and adaptability. From Rome’s classrooms to Hollywood’s sets and AI labs, his journey embodies an ongoing quest to tell stories, connect cultures, and push creative boundaries across mediums.
